Firefox is a Web browser, meaning the program that you use to... well, browse the Web. Most people use Microsoft's program, called Internet Explorer (check the title bar up at the top - it should say what browser you're using). IE uses the logo that the fox is pouncing on. Firefox uses a logo that looks like the one directly above the fox in the snow.
Internet Explorer hasn't been updated in a long time and has a lot of bugs in the code so it doesn't always work right, and it has a lot of security flaws. Firefox, however, is very efficiently coded, and is quite safe from most virus attacks.
One of the other big advantages of Firefox is that it contains several features that IE doesn't have, and most of them are very useful to most people. Firefox can even be extended further than it already is by going on firefox's site and searching around for extensions that suite your needs. Firefox is very small & light (the download is just under 5MB!) and actually uses less system resources than IE. If you ever decide you want to go back to it, though, it's simple. Just start using IE again like you always have (though I don't know why you would).
